Saxenda –
A medication used to treat obesity when diet and exercise haven’t yielded the desired results

Novo Nordisk has been conducting research in the field of obesity for over 20 years, developing new medications and implementing advanced treatment methods for this disease
In 2014, the FDA first approved Saxenda, a liraglutide injection, for the treatment of obesity. Then, in 2020, the same agency approved Saxenda (liraglutide) for the treatment of adolescents aged 12 to 17 years with obesity.

Contraindications
- Allergy to liraglutide or any components of the drug.
- History of medullary thyroid carcinoma, especially family history.
- Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2).
- Severe depression, suicidal thoughts or behavior.
- Severe renal or hepatic impairment.
- Children under 12 years and adolescents weighing less than 60 kg.
- Patients older than 75 years.
- Pregnancy and lactation.
- Severe chronic heart failure (NYHA class IV).
- Concomitant use of other weight-loss medications.
- Combination with other GLP-1 receptor agonists.
- Obesity caused by endocrine disorders, eating disorders, or medication-induced weight gain.

Side effect
The safety of Saxenda® was evaluated in 5 double-blind, placebo-controlled studies involving 5813 adult patients with obesity or overweight and at least one obesity-related comorbidity. Overall, gastrointestinal disorders were the most frequently reported adverse reactions during Saxenda® therapy (67.9%) (see Description of individual adverse reactions).
Table 3 lists adverse reactions reported in studies of adult patients. Adverse reactions are grouped by MedDRA system organ class and frequency. Frequency is defined as follows: very common (≥1/10); common (≥1/100 to <1/10); uncommon (≥1/1000 to <1/100); rare (≥1/10,000 to <1/1000); very rare (<1/10,000).

In a study of 251 adolescents aged 12-17, after 56 weeks of Saxenda treatment: participants taking the drug lost an average of 2.65% of body weight, while those in the placebo group gained 2.37%

After a complete check-up, I’ll start the injections again, but this time I probably won’t use the 3.0 dosage; I’ll stick with 2.4. Overall, I recommend the drug, but careful attention to diet and health is necessary. Don’t self-prescribe it. Read the instructions and the symptom list multiple times before starting.
